VARIOUS STRATGIES TO COUNTER MUAY THAI FIGHTERS

shaolin kung fu

Sifu Eugene strikes a Muay Thai fighter's groin as soon as he kicks

Understanding that Muay Thai fighters usually attack in a series of three is a great help in preparing how to counter them. There are various strategies we can use.

One strategy is to let him complete his series of attacks, then counter-attack him before he starts another series. Another strategy is is to intercept him half way and counter-attack. A third strategy is to counter-strike as soon as he attacks.

Counter against Muay Thai Sequence

Sifu Roland demonstrates an effective counter against a Muay Thai sequence. Can you see which Muay Thai sequence Nick Jones is using?

Aiming at Opponent's Third Attack

shaolin kung fu

Sifu Roland and Nick goes over their attacks and counters slowly. Knowing that a Muay Thai fighter often attack in a series of three attacks, Sifu Roland brushes off his first two attacks, and counters at the third one by felling the opponent onto the ground.

Intercepting Opponent's Attacks

shaolin kung fu

A student (he has asked his name not to be mentioned) uses the same sequence but changes the left and right modes. In the first encounter Sifu Anthony intercepts the student at his second attack. In the third encounter, Sifu Anthony intercepts at the third attack.

Felling Opponent at Third Attack

Now the roles are reverse. Sifu Anthony attacks with a Muay Thai sequence. The student strikes the leg in the first kick, brushes off the second attack, and fells the opponent at his third attack.

Responding Spontaneously and Correctly

shaolin kung fu

Sifu Anthony lifts up his front leg to dodge the student's low sweeping kick, and intercepts his further attack by countering with a palm thrust into the opponent's eye. When you are familiar with a few common Muay Thai attack sequences, it does not matter which sequence or part of a sequence your opponent uses, and you will respond spontaneously and correctly.

Change Accordingly to Opponent's Attacks

shaolin kung fu

As Sifu Eugene is quite familiar with the Muay Thai attack sequences, he can respond spontaneously and correctly no matter how the Muay Thai fighter attacks. As he kicks, Sifu Eugene counters with “Catch Tiger in Mountain”. When the Muay Thai fighter changes his attack, Sifu Eugene changes accordingly.

Felling Opponent onto the Ground

shaolin kung fu

As a Muay Thai fighter posed by Alex attacks with a sweeping kick, Sifu Zhang Wuji brushes away the kicking leg and fell the opponent onto the ground. A Muay Thai fighter may change his attack and continues with other attacks.

Be Careful of Double Sweeping Kicks

shaolin kung fu

Now the roles are reverse. Alex counter-strikes the Muay Thai fighter, posed by Sifu Zhang Wuji, as he attacks. Be careful that the Muay Thai fighter may use a left and a right double sweeping kicks.
