STRATEGY IN FREE SPARRING COMPETITIONS

Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit

Grandmaster Wong sparring with Sifu Mauro

At a Taijiquan graduation dinner in Bern on 26th August 2013 someone asked Grandmaster Wong a question on combat application. This led to an impromptu demonstration by Grandmaster Wong.

Grandmaster Wong reiterated his frustration that he had given the school an extraordinary strategy but no one had followed it. Instead, some instructors, though undoubtedly with good intention, taught their students to practice what the Grandmaster had specifically asked them not to do.

First the Grandmaster demonstrated what Shaolin Wahnam fighters should not do, such as fighting like a Boxer. Next he demonstrated what they should do, like using patterns from Praying Mantis Kungfu and Combat Sequence 1 of Shaolin Kungfu to push an opponent to a wall. He also demonstrated what should be done if an opponent broke off from the pressing attack and counter-attacked wish strikes, kicks, felling and chin-na techniques.

Then Grandmaster Wong demonstrated if a kungfu exponent used more sophisticated techniques, his opponent would have no chance
