ASKING THE WAY

Shaolin Kung Fu

When you encounter difficulty -- in kungfu combat or in life -- it is very helpful to take one step back.

If you just move in to attack an opponent, you make a serious mistake of giving free offers to your opponent. This is actually a very common mistake, though many martial artists are unaware if it, and so are not in a position to exploit the free offers.

You should ensure that you are safe not only from his surprised hand attacks, but also his surprised kicks, especially at your groin. Moving in to close or open an opponent so that you are not only safe from his surprised counter but also you have some advantages, is known as "Asking the Way".
