Question 1

It has been almost 25 years since I first had the pleasure of meeting you in Toronto when you came to teach courses in chi kung and kungfu. My routine includes Lifting the Sky, Carry the Moon, Pushing Mountains and Dancing Fairy.

I look forward to seeing you again one day, if you perhaps return to Canada, or maybe even in Malaysia for the Intensive Chi Kung Course.

— Andrew, Canada

Answer

It is great hearing from you after almost 25 years.

Chi kung needs to be practiced every day like taking breakfast, not just once a while. You should practice twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening or at night. But you need to practice for only about 10-15 minutes per session. Others not in our school need to practice for about an hour.

You should practice just one exercise per session -- "Lifting the Sky", "Carrying the Moon", "Pushing Mountain" or "Dancing Fairy". You can vary the four exercises. Remember your breathing.

You should practice just one exercise for about 6-8 minutes, and then follow with chi flow for another 6-8 minutes. In the chi flow, you remain relaxed, and don't think of anything. If you feel like swaying, just sway and enjoy your chi flow.

It is the chi flow, not the chi kung exercise, that gives you good health, vitality and longevity. If you remain still, just be still, and be relaxed and don't think of anything. It is likely that you will sway.

Once a while, about once in 3 or 4 sessions, you can combine all the four chi kung exercises in any order. Start with normal speed, but increase the speed. You need not worry about your breathing. In other words, you use the four exercises as a set to generate a chi flow.

When you are performing "Pushing Mountain", you need not stretch out your arms as if you were holding an energy ball. You just drop your arms rapidly. Remember you need not worry about your breathing.

If you carry on your daily practice, you will soon be healthy, full of vitality and enjoy longevity. It is a very good prevention against any illness. You will also enjoy your daily life, have peak performance and be peaceful and happy.

I haven't been sick for more than 50 years ago. That itself is a great achievement.

Question 2

Last May (in 2021) I had yet another beautiful experience.

I was with a group of friends, chatting outdoors, when a pigeon standing nearby flew to me, landed on my upper back and climbed up to my head. Please see the pictures enclosed.

The pigeon stood on my baihui, and stayed there, apparently very happy and comfortable, for about 15 minutes.

As we all had to get going, I asked my friends to invite the pigeon to fly away, which he was reluctant to do, and they had to insist several times.

With my deepest gratitude and affection, I wish you all the very best.

— Javier, Spain

Answer

A pigeon is a sign of peace. It is a very good omen. Indeed it is another spiritual development.

(Note: the "baihui" energy point is at the crown of the head.)

Question 3

Have you heard of sallekhana of the Jains?

— Bala, India

Answer

I do not agree with the philosophy of sallekhana (a practice that stops eating with the intention of preparing for death as the ultimate way to expunge all sins and karma, liberating the soul from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth). We are given this life in the phenomenal world, and we have to make the best of it.

First we need to be healthy and full of vitality. Practicing genuine chi kung is a very good way, and we have to practice every day.

In Shaolin Wahnam, because we practice at a very high level, we need only to practice for about 10 to 15 minute, two sessions a day, i.e. once in the morning and the other time in the evening or at night. Others who practice genuine chi kung, and are usually at a low level, have to practice for an hour.

Most other people, which forms more than 80%, practice gentle, physical exercise, and gentle, physical exercise does not contribute to good health, vitality and longevity.

We must have good thoughts all the time, and we aim for spiritual cultivation.

Question 4

How many children did Sifu Ho Fatt Nam have? Do the children and your classmates also practice kung fu? Do they teach kung fu? What was the name of his wife?

Answer

I was quite surprised when Sifu No Fatt Nam, the third generation successor from the Shaolin Monastery at Quanzhou accepted me as his student, as great masters were very strict in accepting students.

He was seldom at home, but we practiced his arts in his house all the same. I later became his assistant in teaching kungfu at the Guangdong Association, Kuala Trengganu, Malaysia.

He was a spiritualist, i.e. giving spiritual advice to others. He served under the Monkey God, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, and the Taoist immortal, Immortal Li. I am forever grateful to Immortal Li as he was instrumental in the growth of Shaolin Wahnam

He had six children -- three boys and three girls. His eldest son, Sifu Ho Kok Cheong, is a well-known traumatologist. Sifu Ho Kok Cheong and my classmates practice kungfu, and they are all very accomplished.

I don't think Sifu Ho Kok Cheong and my classmates teach kungfu. Usually great masters do not want others to know of their kungfu.

I also do not know the name of Sifu Ho Fatt Nam's wife. My wife and I called her "simu" (teacher's wife).

Question 5

We are longing to visit Penang again once this pandemic is over.

— Daniel, Brussel

Answer

You need to practice for about 10-15 minutes a session, two sessions a day.

Our chi kung is very powerful. Most people -- more than 80% of "chi kung" practitioners -- practice gentle, physical exercise, and gentle, physical exercise does not bring good health, vitality and longevity.

Question 6

Thank you so much for your advice.

Answer

We are at a very high level. You can easily enter into a chi kung state of mind, but others merely practice gentle, physical exercise.

Actually you don't have to spend time to enter into a chi kung state of mind. You just start with your chi kung and kungfu and enjoy a chi flow. You have to guard against over-training. You are already in a chi kung state of mind.

As an analogy, you don't have to take your driving test again; you already have passed your driving test.

Just how high is our high-level chi kung and kungfu? If you can operate at 30% of your potential, you are already at a very high level. Others merely perform gentle, physical exercise.

Genuine chi kung is very rare today, and it was very rare in the past. A good analogy is Taijiquan, or Tai Chi Chuan in English. There is nothing internal and nothing martial in the "Taijiquan" practiced today. Yet Taijiquan is a rare internal, martial art

Please note that "chi" in "Tai Chi Chuan" in English, is "ultimate", and is spelt as "ji" in Romanized Chinese. Chi as in chi kung is "energy": it is spelt as "qi" in Romanized Chinese. "Tai Chi" in English, or "Taiji" in Romanized Chinese, is the "Cosmos".

Please remember that what I needed a year of training during my students' days is what a typical Shaolin Wahnam student needs a month. I needed 20 years before I could experience some internal force, and 20 years before I could comfortably beat professional fighters and other masters.

A Shaolin Wahnam student can experience internal force within the first hour if he attains my intensive courses, and if he practices diligently he can beat professional fighters and other masters in a year.

Question 7

What do you think of my physical or mental condition at present? Sometimes I feel like I don't make any progress. I still have a lot of burping, kungfu like movement, but I am still practising anyway. Anyway, I have more mental clarity now than in the past. My schoolmates are impressed.

Answer

I don't know about your physical or mental condition at present, as we have not met for some time. But I think your condition is good.

You don't feel you are making progress because you are so used to making progress. Imagine you just came out of school. 500 euros is quite a lot of money for a school-leaver. Now you become your own boss. 5000 euros, which is 10 times, may not be much money to you.

Sitting meditation is advanced. You should take care of your health first, as health is our greatest wealth. You should focus on chi flow.

Question 8

Can you please elaborate.

Answer

Later when you are powerful, you can try One Finger Shooting Zen. First you practice on alternate days, then you progress to practicing every day.

Next, you can try Golden Bridge. By then you may be practicing One Finger Shooting Zen every day. Add the extra time to your daily practice. Let us say you spend about 5 minutes for your daily practice. So now you add another 5 minutes to daily practice, making about 10 minutes in all.

Next you can try Yijinjing, or Sinew Metamorphosis. Yijinjing is an advanced art. You need to practice any one of the Sinew Metamorphosis exercises. You should also practice other aspects of kungfu. In the end you would be spending about 15 minutes for your daily practice.
