Omar and Chris sparring at the First Shaolin Wahnam San Shou Competitions

The video below taken from the First Shaolin Wahnam San Shou Competition held in Brighton in June 2012 shows a marked improvement in free sparring competitions. If you fight like what is shown in the videos, you have a good chance of winning.

What are the two features in the video shown here which were not present in the video shown here of the First and Second Shaolin Wahnam Free Sparring Competitions?

Yes, in the earlier video, there was no threat, and the combatants used technique-sparring. Here there is threat, and the combatants use sequence-sparring.

If you wish o win free sparring competitions, you must be threatening to your opponents. This can be accomplished if your attacks are forceful and fast. Your attack must exhibit the possibility of hurting your opponent, not just playing with them.

You must use sequences in your fighting. In other words, you must not just use isolated techniques, then retreat. You must press in and attack your opponents continuously, giving them no chance to counter or defend themselves.

To accomplish this, you have to practice one or a few combat sequences numerous times so that you can execute them fast and flowingly. You just apply them in the competitions. You must, of course, cover yourself adequately as you attack.
