Morgan, Kok San and Chee Kwang performing Four Gates in the 1980s

“Cross-Roads at Four Gates”, which was the fundamental set at the southern Shaolin Temple in Fujian, is a good example of profundity in simplicity. The set is simple, but its combat applications profound.

The videos presented here were taken in the 1980s in VHS format during a Standardized Test of Grandmaster Wong's early students at Shaolin Wahnam Association in Sungai Petani, Malaysia. They were later converted into digital format. It is fortunate that Sifu Anthony Korahais has these videos and passed them to Grandmaster Wong during his 2008 USA visit. Sifu Eugene Siterman helped to make them available on this webpage.

Grandmaster Wong conducted a special course on “Cross-Roads at Four Gates” at the 2008 UK Summer Camp. The combat applications of Four Gates were taught, but there were some minor variations. Please refer to the Combination Set presented in the videos here as the standard version.

Those performing the Four Gate Solo Set in the videos are Morgan, Kok San, Chee Kwang and Kok Siong, and the two performing the Four Gates Combination Set are Morgan and Kok San. Although the videos are unclear (as a result of the original VHS video tapes being attacked by fungus), they are invaluable as they show Shaolin Wahnam students performing Four Gates about 20 years ago.
