SOME EFFECTIVE TACTICS AGAINST BOXERS

The finer points of applying a Tiger-Claw to fell an opponent

There are many effective tactics against Boxers. Using a Tiger-Claw to deflect a Boxer's fast punches or to grip his arm, and felling him followed with a decisive strike are some examples shown here.

Can you remember the difference between a tactic and a technique? Closing an opponent so that he can not strike you as you attack him is a tactic. You may do so using a Tiger-Claw or a Taming Hand, both of which are techniques. A pattern using the Tiger-Claw technique to close an opponent is “Single Tiger Emerges from Cave”.

Deflecting a Boxer's Force

“shaolin

Alex uses his Tiger-Claws to counter against a Boxer's attacks. Although he is successful, Grandmaster Wong suggests some improvement. Instead of meeting the Boxer's force head-on, it is better to deflect it.

Attacking an Opponent at his Weak Point

“shaolin

But if we wish to use a Tiger-Claw on a Boxer's arm, instead of gripping the Boxer at his lower arm where his main force is focused, it is better to grip him at or above his elbow. In this way we can make use of the opponent's force against himself.

Use Opponent's Momentum against Himself

“shaolin

Innes also uses his Tiger-Claws against a Boxer. Although he is powerful, he needs not use more force than necessary. He also chooses to use the opponent's momentum against herself, instead of meeting force head-on.

Deflecting Momentum instead of Blocking It

“shaolin

Innes block Molly's hook punch before putting her down. Grandmaster Wong suggests that Innes does not even have to block, though he has more than enough force to do so; he can use Molly's momentum to fell her to the ground.

Choosing the Best Stance for the Occasion

“shaolin

Grandmaster Wong suggests to Steve to use a Bow-Arrow Stance instead of a False-Leg Stance in his poise observing an opponent. What advantages can you think of the Bow-Arrow Stance has in this case over the False-Leg Stance.

Better Leverage for Felling Technique

“shaolin

Grandmaster Wong explains that besides changing the stance, Steve can have better leverage for the felling technique if he places his anchoring leg against the opponent's leg.

Felling a Boxer is a Good Tactic

“shaolin

Steve repeats his counter with the suggested improvements. Felling a Boxer is a good tactic to use against a Boxer, who has no techniques in his art to counter such an attack.

Closing a Boxer so that he Cannot Strike You

“shaolin

Steve uses another counter against a Boxer. Instead of felling the opponent, Steve strikes his head. The counters may be different, but the main principle is the same. Do you know what it is? It is to close the Boxer in such a way that he cannot strike you.
